The ETA visa only applies to foreign nationals who are legally admissible to enter Australia, either as a first-timer or a returnee.

Hence, you need to have a clean record and a valid passport to obtain an Australian ETA and enter the country. A denial of the ETA visa in the past means that you have failed to meet the requirements for the specific visa you were applying for, or you were deemed/classified inadmissible by the immigration to enter the country.

If you haven’t fixed the problems that caused your visa denial or previous deportation, chances are you will get a rejection notice again from the government.  In some cases, you may be subject to an exclusion period which will also affect your ability to meet the entry requirements.
